20U Mixer Rack made for the Prodigy
When we got a call from The Prodigy's front of house engineer, Jon Burton, to create a 20U mixer rack for their front man Liam Howlett, we jumped at the chance.
The brief was to create a 20U rack with a mixer on hinged rack strip. It needed to be similar to an original one they already had, but incorporating any improvements we could think of.
After receiving some very detailed drawings and photos from Mr Burton, we set about looking at how it was built and more importantly how we could improve on it.
First off we looked at the hinged mixer. We made a frame around the rack strip and used a high-end adjustable rachet stay which ment it could sit and be used at any angle, but also layed flat by simply pulling the frame to the top which releases the rachet pins allowing the the mixer to sit flat, ready to be cased for transit.
Then we looked at the rack itself. At 20 Units high it was a bit of a jungle of cables and wires so we used the double rack strip on the sides to attach some black laminated side panels for asthetics and to keep everything in place, which helps for reattaching the lid.
The frame was attached to the base using some 30mm rubber shock mounts tapped into the frame and connected to the base using M8 countersunk bolts.
The whole rack was then cased using our black laminate ply wood and our handles and catches. We also used our custom location and angle and the whole case sits on 4 heavy duty castors.
We also refurbished 4 cable trunks and made a standard 14U sleeve for the Prodigy aswell.
We have been informed that all parties, engineers and band members are very happy with the cases and the improvements made. So we are definitely on the case!!
